It was another weekend in Schreiber on Nov. 3rd and 4th for hockey with the Peewee teams this time, but not with the success the Midget team had last weekend. We started out looking good against the Nipigon Elks with a big win of 8-1 then we played Marathon blue which was an OK game, at least it was close competition but Marathon pulled out the win in the last few minutes of the 3rd period. Later that day we played our third game with the host team of Schreiber Northstars, that also was a close game and going into the end of the third period we were down 1-2 but in the last minute we scored to end the game in a tie. "Jonathan scoring against Schreiber"
The next day Sunday, we had our 2nd early 9:00 am start with a game against Marathon Black whom had some very large and intimidating kids that were not all that friendly to play against. We bounced off of them for a while then our team started to play a little hesitant with the puck and the Marathon team hovering over them with a big hand to face. This ended with a 9-1 loss which put us in a position in the finals to play them again for a playoff position. By the way the Marathon Black team finished round robin in 1st place with no loses, I wonder why. So we played them again with the same results and an even rougher play style then the previous match up with them leaving our players just trying to get rid of the puck before they get compressed into the ice surface.
I was not impressed by this tournament this year, the refereeing was not good which lead to some unfair game play which spoiled what could have been some competitive hockey because it is in those players to play great hockey given an even playing field. Some of the teams have had a reputation for a long time of extreme rough play, to bad the towns, the ref's, the coaches, and the parents put up with this, when some individual had started that style back in the day, it has continued to plaque our tournaments with leaving a terrible taste in our mouths while we take the long drive home.
